Change of Command SubWest Rotarians gathered at Pensacola Junior College’s Anna Lamar Art Center in June to say “thanks and well done” to Club President Mike Marshal and his Board. We inducted seven new Paul Harris Fellows at the Change of Command event. ___ Paul Harris Fellows have been inducted this year, to date.
Greetings! Visitors and members run the Greeters Gauntlet as they enter the Pensacola Yacht Club, the Thursday Noon meeting place of SubWest Rotary. Each week a different “sub” group shakes hands or hugs those coming in the door and presents them with a nametag.
Groaners SubWest Rotary is known far and wide for its “Groaners” -– the weekly welcome to members, visitors and guests that may include a homily, a joke, or a true tale guaranteed to make listeners “groan.” Capt. Ferd Salomon, above, serves as Groaner-in-Chief this year.
You’ve Got Mail Each week, club members receive an email from President Bill Spain, highlighting what they saw or missed at the meeting, announcing the next program, and reminding everyone to live the 4-Way Test every day.
The Anchor This year, SubWest launched The Anchor, a colorful newsletter highlighting SubWest meetings, members, events and activities. The Anchor appears monthly on SubWest meeting tables.
Weekly Foundation Raffle After 52 weeks when no one could find the Ace of Spades and claim the weekly drawing, SubWesters Jerold Hall, James Hosman, Kevin Ryan, Greg Threadgill, Jay Overman and Tim Couch pooled their resources to win the $1572 jackpot, with an equal amount going to the Rotary Foundation. Amazingly, the next week, Charles Haas pulled the Ace of Spades from a new deck of cards -- causing many to wonder if “Coldfingers” Spain had stacked the deck!
RECURSO RECURSO is a non-profit College Student organization dedicated to global development, healthcare and poverty alleviation in development countries. SubWest will donate water bottles (we have already collected over 100) for the University of Florida Chapter to take to the Puerto Cabezas area of Nicaragua. We are also donating up to $1,000 to purchase hygiene-enhancing items and are working with Wal-Mart to provide gift certificates to complement our cash contributions. InteractThis year, in addition to our interact students conducting an entire meeting at our club and assisting with our boat show, the students developed criteria to elect an “Interact Student of the Year”. They, as peers, will select a student they believe made the most difference as an Interact Student. Their membership doubled this year, LEADING THE WAY to promote the Essay Contest and Core Values.
Ambassador to Peru Trisha Woodburn made waves in South America as she made her first “ambassadorial” trip to Peru on behalf of SubWest and District 6940. Trisha met with Peruvian Rotarians, government leaders, and faith-based volunteers to scout new service projects. SubWest is LEADING THE WAY to build a soup kitchen complete with tables, tools equipment and a solid new roof for residents of Cañete, Peru. We identified five other projects for “Adoption”. A professional presentation has been prepared to solicit participation in these projects.
CROP Military Appreciation Luncheon Combined Rotary Clubs of Pensacola (CROP) tapped SubWest’s own retired XO Ferd Salomon III to organize Pensacola’s 2006 Military Appreciation Luncheon in November. In spite of a surprise visit across town by the Commander in Chief of U.S. Armed Forces, CROP had SRO to honor the military personnel who serve us with honor and valor. Ferd the Third received the District Governor’s Citation for his efforts to bring the military personnel to a CROP event.
Katrina First Responders $8000 of SubWest 2006 Boat Show Proceeds provided seed money for a Rotary Foundation leveraging phenomenon! An effort to raise funds for a ravaged community of Belle Chasse, Louisiana grew to $107,000 in donations at the groundbreaking for the new Belle Chasse Children’s Library. Bill Spain and Past President Huntley Johnson, above, joined New Orleans District Governor as well as Rotarians from the United States, Canada and Europe to celebrate the opening of the library.
Families First Network Operation Santa SubWest Rotary members collected and donated $2450 to the Families First Network Operation Santa Fund, which provides Christmas gifts to needy children in foster care and protective custody in Northwest Florida. Operation Santa helped more than 1500 children in 2006, and this is fourth consecutive year that SubWest Rotary played a key role. Smokin’ for Charity Former Club President Greg Threadgill organized the first Pensacola Cigar Charity Dinner to help two children’s charities. FamilesFirst Network and Big Brothers, Big Sisters received generous holiday donations, on behalf of SubWest Rotary, to help needy children.
“How I Lead” Christmas Essay Contest 28 youth from the Boys & Girls Club of Pensacola joined SubWesters on a Christmas Shopping Spree at Wal-Mart. The youth were winners of the “HOW I LEAD” Holiday Essay Contest. Warrington Wal-Mart Manager (and SubWest Rotarian) Tracy Dickerson helped us stretch contest dollars. Many of the youth chose to purchase gifts for their families instead of themselves.
Christmas Celebration Spouses and guests were treated to the twinkling environment of Skopelos Restaurant on December 14 to celebrate the Christmas season. Festivities included seasonal readings, a gourmet meal, and a holiday songfest.
Sweetheart Serenade Dinner SubWesters gathered at EAT, a downtown Pensacola bistro, to celebrate Valentines Day with their sweethearts and friends. Guests were treated to a musical serenade by the Rotary Rooters from the Downtown Club.
Family Night at Pelican Park Pensacola Pelicans hosted the SubWest Rotary Club as their honored guests at Family Night at Pelican Park. Members and guests were treated to a Cajun feast while enjoying the baseball game.
4-Way Test Coloring Books Victor Rojas, above, LEADS THE WAY to deliver 4-Way Test Coloring Books to over 300 hundred third graders in Westside Pensacola elementary schools. In addition to teaching the important message of the 4-Way Test, the coloring book and a CD of accompanying songs are useful for promoting literacy.
2007 Boat and RV Show SubWest SIGNATURE FUNDRAISING EVENT is the SubWest Boat and RV Show. This annual Spring event is held at University Mall. Proceeds underwrite Club service projects, including Belle Chasse Library Rebuilding, the Christmas Essay Contest, the Responsible Accountable Youth project, the Chalmette, LA Public Library, and a dual mentor/scholarship overture for at-risk sixth grade students who will become first-generation college students. Wind Feather Promotes Rotary SubWest “hoisted” a new flag at the Pensacola Yacht Club. The new SubWest Rotary wind feather not only directs participants to the weekly meetings and other activities, but also heightens public awareness of Rotary.
Boy Scouts of America SubWest provides a strong link and continuing leadership with the Boy Scouts of America. Local Scouts will help with The Boat and RV Show promotion and clean up as part of their environmental and community service projects. SubWest is proud to make an annual donation to support Scouting activities in the region.
Lupus Foundation SubWest members collect used cell phones, computers and electronic equipment to assist the Lupus Foundation and other local charities.
4-Way Test Essay Contest SubWest Rotary hosted the 14th annual SubWest Essay Contest in 2007. High school students were invited to tell us if the Four-Way Test is relevant today. Finalists read their essays at a SubWest luncheon meeting and the winners go home with scholarship awards for themselves and their school.
Mentors on the Move SubWest’s newest community partner is the Boys & Girls Club of Pensacola. With help from a District Simplified Grant, SubWest will LEAD THE WAY in developing career shadowing, after-school tutoring, and adult mentoring to help at-risk youth. BGC Director Hattie Grace McCorvey is thrilled to have 90 new mentor-coaches to help her kids!
Responsible Accountable Youth (RAY) Responsible, Accountable Youth (RAY) is President Bill Spain’s sustaining benefit project, encouraging young people to make correct choices. We are reminding people that “kids having kids equals poverty and trauma”. Watch for a comprehensive community effort.
The Governor Visits SubWest District Governor Gene and Elaine Sherron traveled to Pensacola for several intentional visits this year. The Sherrons kicked off the year with an official DG visit in August, joined the Spains at Governor Crist’s inauguration in January, and came here in February for our Sweethearts Serenade Dinner.
LEAD THE WAY for Foundation Support The “Birthday Check Brigade” continues to LEAD THE WAY for Rotary International Foundation support in 6940. SubWest continues to recognize the power of the Rotary International Foundation by exceeding our goals for the third year in a row!
SubWest Rotary Foundation SubWest Past Presidents’ Squadron LEADS THE WAY to establishing the SubWest Rotary Foundation, a nonprofit, Federal tax-exempt entity that will enhance our capacity for Service Above Self projects.
50 Years and Going Strong PDG Wayne Etheredge is facilitating a Golden Gala in June to celebrate SubWest’s Golden Anniversary –- 50 years of service above self for the second oldest Rotary club in Pensacola. Past President Huntley Johnson, above, WWII Marine Aviator is one of two surviving charter SubWest members and is still active in the club.
Assistant Governor Ron Richards SubWest is proud to have Ron Richards serve as “our” District 6940 Assistant Governor. Ron and Rotarian wife, Innes, attend SubWest meetings regularly. We enthusiastically support his election as District Governor for 6940!
SubWest Logo Members chose a new logo to represent SubWest in our Rotary efforts. The logo features the Blue Angles, reflecting a long association of the club with the Blues and the military in our community.
Club History Historian and SubWest member Paul Parks and his wife Jennie, compiled a comprehensive history of the Rotary Club of Pensacola Suburban West. It includes all fifty years and is released in conjunction with the 50th Anniversary Celebration. All members will receive an electronic copy and it will be accessible on the club website.
Golden Celebration DVD
When members arrive at the Golden Anniversary Gala, they will be presented with a commemorative DVD. Fifty years of The Rotary Club of Pensacola Suburban West will be captured in a photo presentation and written history. A large photo collection of the entire current year will be a bonus.
District Simplified Grant District 6940 rewarded SubWest Rotary’s “LEAD THE WAY” history by presenting us with a $5000 District Simplified Grant!

Honda Ridgeline Raffle SubWest LED THE WAY with Honda Raffle sales. Canceling plans for our own car raffle for the 50th Anniversary, we chose to put all efforts into support for the District 6940 Honda Raffle, meeting our goal of ticket sales.

Program/Calendar To supplement profits from the Boat and RV Show, SubWest sold ads for a program for the show. Programs were presented at the successful “Kick Off Dinner and Silent Auction” fund raiser.
Billboards Promoting the SubWest Boat and RV Show, SubWest was proud to have two large billboards placed at major intersections in Pensacola. As a public relations benefit, this also promoted awareness of Rotary International.
Book Plates Promoting public relations of SubWest Rotary and Rotary International is the benefit of SubWest Rotary’s new bookplates, inspired during a break-out meeting at the 6940 2006 Convention. Attached to all books donated by Subwest, the plates display the Rotary Logo as well as the SubWest logo on our permanent documentation of our gift.
Guest Speakers Each week members are treated to interesting and informative programs that vary greatly. A Seeing Eye service dog, above, kept members entertained as well as educating them to the great commitment of the trainers and benefit to the recipients.
Project Continues to Give Hope of Vision Supported by Rotary volunteers, Mulege, Mexico has eye and dental care. Our club, with the help of a Rotary grant, purchased a computerized Lens Meter and a club member taught local Rotarians to calibrate and use the equipment. Our club has been helpful in providing the only hope of vision in this area, as the successful project continues.
Children Services Center During the Pensacola Children Services Center’s (CSC)“Caring About Kids” campaign, SubWest Rotary members collected and donated book and toys for needy children at the center. CSC provides resources and referrals to families seeking childcare, as well as finance assistance to eligible families. CSC also offers parent education and community resource referrals. To thank SubWest for participating, members were invited to a reception. We met families who benefited from the donations.
