Rotary in Florida
The membership of Rotary International consists of Rotary clubs organized and existing in accordance with the RI Constitution and Bylaws. Florida’s first Rotary club was chartered in Jacksonville in 1912, the second in Pensacola in 1915, and the third in Miami in 1917. All were contained in District 5. As both Rotary and Florida grew, district boundaries changed fourteen times between 1915 and 1991. Today there are eight Rotary districts in Florida.
Rotary District 6940
In 1981, the present boundaries of District 694 (now 6940) were established to include 25 counties in Northwest Florida, stretching from Pensacola to Lake City and south to Chiefland. Today there are 2,780 members in 47 Rotary clubs in the district. An annual district conference is held in the spring and is the highlight District function during each Rotary year (July 1 – June 30).
Our District is part of Rotary International Zone 34 , which encompass districts in the Caribbean, Florida, Georgia, and Puerto Rico. All Districts meet at the annual Zone Institute, usually held in October.
